"I Heard The Bells" - John Gabriel Arends featuring Rheannon

"I love this song because I believe it brings hope in the day we are living. The original words of this Christmas carol were penned on Christmas Eve 1863 during the Civil War in the United States by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow when he received the news that his son had been severely wounded in battle. On the heels of 40,000 lives being lost in the Battle of Gettysburg, Longfellow grappled with darkness around him. I have added two additional verses with my own lyrics to help spread even more hope to those who listen." - John Gabriel Arends

A MESSAGE TO OUR LISTENERS:

December

Peace to YOU this Christmas!

On Christmas Day in 1863, American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was inspired to write a poem, which has since become one of the most well-known Christmas carols. Originally titled "Christmas Bells," the verses honestly contrast the declaration of the angels to the shepherds, the night Jesus was born with the hard reality of war, and the despair of loss.

Longfellow had recently lost his wife in a fire, and his oldest son had been severely wounded in the Civil War, when he penned the words which became the lyrics to "I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day."

I think we can all relate to the honesty of Longfellow's writing; hearing that promise of Peace on Earth… while "hate is strong…" in the world. And yet, he came full circle by the poem's conclusion, to proclaim even louder the hope we have through Christ.

It's a reminder that the LIGHT of JESUS shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot extinguish it.

May that joyful fact bring renewed hope into your heart this Christmas!

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,

and wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,

A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,

And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,

And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;

"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;

The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

(by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
